Local veteran presented with a special Harley Davidson

November 11th, 2014

A local group is thanking local veterans for their service by giving away  special gifts in the form of two wheels.
“Harley’s For Heroes” surprised veteran Shane Betts on Sunday with a newly rebuilt Harley Davidson motorcycle at Appalachian Harley Davidson in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County.
Twice a year, the group presents a classic-style Harley to wounded a veteran who has returned home from Iraq or Afghanistan.
Each Harley is custom-built solely from donated parts, making every bike different.
Shane Betts, a Purple Heart recipient and Harley Davidson employee, says he’s excited to ride his very first Harley.
“It’s awesome, I’ve always wanted a Harley. I never really could afford one, I’ve been riding for a while, I’ve been talking to a lot of people about how I wanted to go back to cruising, and stuff because I’m used to being on a sport bike, so it really made my day, it made my year,” Betts said.
The veterans are picked from a list of Purple Heart recipients.
So far, organizers have given away 21-bikes since starting the event about nine years ago.
The bikes are usually gifted around Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.
