March 11th, 2014

NASHIK: The Nashik Road police recovered 11 two-wheelers from four juveniles after they were caught red-handed stealing a motorcycle from the Nashik Road railway station on Monday morning.

All four are residents of Nashik Road area and Class X students of a school. Stealing motorcycles was a thrill for the group; they abandoned the stolen bikes after these ran out of fuel.

"With repeated incidents of vehicle thefts being reported in the city, we had deployed plainclothes police personnel in areas like Regimental Plaza and Nashik Road railway station. At around 11 am on Monday, the four teenagers were found trying to steal a motorcycle from the railway station," DCP D S Swami of Zone II told TOI.

Swami said that during inquiry, the police recovered a bunch of keys from the youngsters, while they showed places where they had abandoned previously stolen bikes. Swami said the Upnagar police found two abandoned bikes, while the juveniles showed the police nine bikes they had left parked in different areas of Nashik Road. Four other bikes, which the group had abandoned, could not be traced. The police said that these four could have been stolen by other burglars from the places from where they were abandoned.

Officials said that in previous cases, they had found that motorcycles were usually stolen by petty burglars, to be sold at throwaway prices. Most motorcycles were stolen in the rural areas around the city. These were then sold to new customers at prices as low as Rs 5,000, with an assurance to take the remaining amount of money in the deal after providing the vehicles' documents. However, burglars never went back to their customers.
