COOLBETH WINS BIG ON INDY MILE TO RECLAIM TWINS POINTS LEAD

Smith Nips Mees for Second as Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew Fills the Podium

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (August 29, 2009) - Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth roared to a decisive win in the AMA Grand National Twins main on the Indy Mile at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Coolbeth led every lap and constantly pulled away from the field to cross the finish line with a lead of more than nine seconds. Coolbeth, who also won the four-lap Dash for Cash bonus sprint race, moves back into the season points lead with two races left on the schedule.

“I just put my head down for the first nine laps and tried to open a gap on the field,” said Coolbeth, the defending Grand National Twins champion. “The Harley-Davidson team put me on an awesome motorcycle tonight, and that made it look easy. I was able to break the draft. I really could not believe I was able to pull away like that.”

Behind Coolbeth, Moroney’s Harley-Davidson/Screamin' Eagle rider Bryan Smith and Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Screamin' Eagle rider Jared Mees staged an epic, 25-lap back-and-forth battle for second place. Smith and Mees officially swapped positions seven times and were never separated by more than a tenth of second. The pair crossed the finish line with Smith leading by inches, officially ahead of Mees by just 0.001 second.

“I gave it everything I had tonight but it just wasn’t enough to catch Coolbeth,” said Smith, who often excels on mile tracks. “We’ve got Springfield coming up, so we’ll give it another shot there.”

Jake Johnson finished fourth, more than 13 seconds behind Coolbeth. Chris Carr Racing/Lancaster Harley-Davidson rider Chris Carr was fifth, followed by Glen Schnabel, Jr., and Latus Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle rider Joe Kopp. Halbert Family/King Kustoms rider Sammy Halbert, the rookie who came to Indy in third place in the points standings, completed 19 of 25 laps and was the last entry to cross the finish line.

The results at Indy mean Mees will give up the series points lead he has held since the Lima, Ohio, race on June 27. Smith climbs from fifth to third, and Halbert falls back to fifth place. After seven of nine 2009 AMA Grand National Twins Championship events, Coolbeth has 113 points, followed by Mees with 109 points, Smith with 96, Carr with 95, Halbert with 88. Kopp is sixth with 80 points.

The 2009 AMA Grand National Twins Championship will next race on Sept. 6 on the Springfield Mile at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill.
