| DESCRIPTION | Maryland State Trooper First Class Shaft S. Hunter, died tragically in the line of duty on May 21, 2011. Born on October 15, 1971, in Bridgeport, Conn., Shaft was the son of Princella and Sherman Hunter, Jr., formerly of Stratford and Beacon Falls. Shaft is also survived by six children, ages 4-19, two brothers, Sherman, III (LaPaula) and Shaun (Cecille) Hunter, and his former wife and friend, Rose. After graduating from St. Joseph's High School in 1990, where he was a valued player on the varsity football team that won back-to-back state titles in 1988 and 1989, Shaft continued his education earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC. Joining the US Marine Corps right after college, he served from 1994 to 2000 and was honorably discharged as a Captain. Shaft received numerous honors, accommodations and citations during his 11 year career with the Maryland State Police, including; "Sniper Murders Task Force" recognition for his countless hours of investigative support in 2002 and the "Trooper of the Year" award in 2003. Also in 2003 he is on record for having one of the largest drug apprehensions in the state, along with his trusted K-9 "Bear". Shaft recently was assigned to the 2010 and 2011 Legislative Sessions security detail receiving official citations for his efforts. Military and Maryland State Police funeral honors were held on Friday, May 27, 2011, with interment at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, Timonium, MD. The Shaft Hunter Memorial Ride was conceived by two Carroll County Sheriff's Deputies who had the honor and priviledge of serving with Shaft while he was assigned as a K9 handler at Barrack G, Westminster, Carroll County, MD. Both deputies are avid motorcyclists and though it may be ironic that it was a motorcyclist that Shaft was attempting to stop prior to his death, it is important to understand that there is only a small percentage of motorcyclists who operate recklessly. Law Enforcement is a brotherhood and so is the "biker" community. It is our hope that each year we might come together to celebrate Shaft's life, make new friends and raise money to help support Shaft's six children which he left behind as a result of his untimely death.
