Thousands of Female Motorcycle Riders Twist the Throttle to Celebrate

WHAT: This May the rumble from those April showers will continue a little longer as thousands of female riders will twist the throttle to celebrate the first-ever Women Riders Month. Harley-Davidson Motor Company and many of its dealerships are hosting events in May for women who are already experiencing freedom on two wheels, as well as to encourage even more to take control and get behind the handlebars of their own Harley.
WHO: Harley-Davidson’s Women’s Outreach Manager [and Ohio State University/University of Dayton graduate / and Western Pennsylvania native], Leslie Prevish, has been with the Motor Company for 11 years [and worked at a local Columbus Harley-Davidson dealership for three years prior]. A passionate rider for 20 years, Leslie enjoys the speed of the racetrack as well as relaxing, solo motorcycle trips in Europe.

Women Riders Month Initiatives Including:
- The 3rd Annual International Female Ride Day on Friday, May 1, 2009, including two Harley-Davidson sponsored rides in New York City and Milwaukee
- The Motor Company’s plan to establish a new world record for the number of women motorcycle trained in one weekend during the first weekend of May
Exponential Growth of Women Riders
- The Motorcycle Industry Council estimates that more than 12 percent of all U.S. motorcyclists are women, and they are the fastest-growing demographic in the sport.
- In the past 20 years, the percentage of women who have purchased new Harley Davidson motorcycles has grown from 4% in 1990 to 12% today.
- More than 60,000 women have taken the Harley-Davidson Rider’s Edge New Rider Course at dealerships across the country since the program’s inception in 2000. Also, since 1974, more than one million women have learned to ride through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse.
Harley-Davidson Programs for Women
- Harley-Davidson is the only motorcycle manufacturer with a Women’s Marketing division, and the company leads the industry in its efforts to encourage women to ride.
- Harley-Davidson dealerships host women-only Garage PartiesTM across the country to provide women with a non-intimidating environment to learn more about motorcycling.
- We Ride is a comprehensive and inspirational piece geared toward women interested in getting into the sport.
- Share Your SparkTM: A Guide to Mentoring is a program the Motor Company created on how riders can be a resource and support system to inspire others to ride, and help them navigate their motorcycling journey.
